Established:
Sequoia National Park was established in 1890. It was California's
first national park and is America's second oldest (after Yellowstone).
Kings Canyon National Park was established in 1940.
Land Area: Sharing a common east-west boundary, Sequoia and Kings
Canyon measure 66 miles from north to south and 36 miles across
at their widest point. Together they cover 865,257 acres.
Lowest and Highest Elevations: The lowest elevation is 1,370 feet
(in the Ash Mountain area) and the highest is 14,494 feet at the
summit of Mount Whitney, the tallest peak in the contiguous 48 states.
Number of Plant and Animal Species: There are 1.464 species of plants
and more than 327 species of animals.
Popular Sights: In Sequoia, see Crescent Meadow; The General Sherman
tree, the largest living tree on earth; Moro Rock; and Giant Forest,
a magnificent sequoia grove. In Kings Canyon, see Kings River and
the canyon that gives the park its name; and Panoramic Point with
views of the Sierra Nevada and the San Joaquin Valley.
Popular Activities: Free ranger-led walks and talks, fishing, hiking,
horseback riding, photography, cross-country skiing, and snowshoe
walks are some of the most popular activities.
Hiking: There are more than 800 miles of marked trails. Eighty percent
of the park is accessible only by foot trails.
Camping & Lodging: More than 1.200 campsites and a variety of
lodging accomodations are found in the parks. |
